The Songs, Chants and Stories of the Yuletide Season

These stories, songs and essays grew out of the author's annual ritual of creating an advent calendar for family and friends. Among the stories, poetry and a mummers' play are ten new Yuletide carols which express the spirit of waiting in darkness anticipating both the nativity of Christmas and the rebirth of light at the winter solstice.

But this is more than just a book for the Advent season. The calendar of days begins with October 31st (the Celtic New Year) and includes All Souls Day, Martinmas (Nov. 11) and Thanksgiving readings before launching into the traditional Yuletide season from December 1st through 26th. There are special animal stories for Christmas Eve and a Mummers play for New Year's Day. The calendar ends on Epiphany (Jan. 6) with a poem about a mystical journey by the stag, the eagle and the salmon. Included are drawings the author created for her son's advent calendar and directions for starting your own family tradition. You will look forward to the daily readings as the season progresses!
